Edmondson's research focuses on the effects of lay eschatological messaging on temporal horizons. In today's digital age, misinformation has become a growing threat in online discourse, particularly when it comes to discussions surrounding climate change. Edmondson's project delves into the motivational consequences of exposure to sensationalized messaging on this issue. By examining the long-term effects, he hopes to influence how existential issues are presented by the media and inform policies aimed at combating the spread of misinformation.
Research Findings to be Showcased at Prestigious Conference
Edmondson's research findings will be showcased in a poster titled "The Effects of End-Times Discourse on Temporal Horizons" at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology's 2024 annual conference. The Courtwright Award for Undergraduate Research Excellence was established in 2020 through the generosity of David and Chris Courtwright, alumni of the University of Kansas. The award is specifically designed to acknowledge outstanding undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences who have demonstrated exceptional research and creative work that holds the potential to make meaningful contributions to their respective fields of study.
The finalists for the Courtwright Award are selected from applications for the Undergraduate Research Awards each semester. This year, Logan Edmondson was chosen as the recipient, highlighting the significance of his research and its potential impact on the field of behavioral neuroscience.
Other Finalists Recognized for their Outstanding Achievements
In addition to Edmondson, several other students were recognized as finalists for the summer/fall 2023 Courtwright Award. Jenna Bellemere, a senior majoring in anthropology and women, gender & sexuality studies, explored the themes of becoming, teleology, and the transition narrative. Brandon Nguyen, a junior majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics, investigated the reactivity of manganese(III)-hydroxo complexes with acidic phenols. Allyson Scribner, a senior majoring in psychology with minors in applied behavioral science and visual art, worked on a project called "Little Free Art Mart."
